If you have been following the reports and rumors on next generation iPhone then you must be having some idea it had to feature a new smaller dock connector.
Since the launch of first iPhone in 2007, all iOS devices have come with 40 pin dock connectors. This uniformity overall suits the customers and that is why it is always welcomed by people. The reasons for such liking is simple that people who own more than one Apple Product do not face problem of connectivity especially in case of chargers. However, we want to see some new innovations in the Apple devices also featured 30 pin dock connectors. Same dock connector helps in a way that single charger can be used with all Apple devices, even camera connection kit or music docks can be used with existing products as well. Now the latest Reuters report is going to break this existing pattern and we don’t know that how this change will be welcomed by the customers.
A report regarding the same speculation was given in February this year that Apple is planning to drop the idea of their old custom 30 pin connectors. This is what Reuters report said:
Apple Inc’s new iPhone will drop the wide dock connector used in the company’s gadgets for the best part of a decade in favor of a smaller one, a change likely to annoy the Apple faithful but which could be a boon for accessory makers.
The iPhone 5, Apple’s next generation iPhone expected to go on sale around October, will come with a 19-pin connector port at the bottom instead of the proprietary 30-pin port “to make room for the earphone moving to the bottom”, two sources familiar with the matter told Reuters.
That would mean the new phone would not connect with the myriad of accessories such as speakers and power chargers that form part of the ecosystem around iPods, iPads and iPhones, without an adaptor.
As far as the performance is concerned the smaller dock will be of great benefit in terms of technology. Besides the disadvantage of breaking old uniformity the new dock will have rest all benefits for next generation iPhone. This make one thing clear that new iPhone is going to be thinner and lighter in weight. Less the number of connectors, less will be the profile of as compared to its predecessors as it is going to free a lot of space to make the device thinner. The second advantage of this smaller connector will be that it be able to accommodate repositioned headset jack adjacent to it.
The point to be noted is that Apple is seriously focusing on making the new iPhone thinner in order to match with competitive Android devices so there is no reason why Apple should not go for this option especially after grabbing the patent for reducing size of charging dock earlier this year.
So the overall disadvantage of making the iPhone 5 profile thinner will be less. All the existing accessories will be of no more use with new iPhone. If this report materializes, then from this particular device onwards, all upcoming Apple devices will be thinner in profile and uniformity in new devices will be maintained. It means that all new devices are going to come with 19 pin dock connectors in future after iPhone 5 release.
