The man behind iOS 5.1.1 Untethered Jailbreak ‘Pod2g’ is now hacking with base-band of iPh0ne 4S. Pod2g is a famous hacker who is the man behind release of Absinthe Tool for Untethered Jailbreak on iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch and Apple TV 2. He was able to launch the successful Jailbreak with combined efforts of Chronic Dev Team less Apple TV 3. There were no news after that and apparently pod2g seemed to be free. Now he has announced that he is working on Unlocking of iPhone 4S.
This was certainly a good news and iPhone 4S must be excited to hear about this surprise from pod2g. He has done wonders in Jailbreak field but this time he is going in for unlocking which is definitely a great development. Basband Unlocking is one of the most difficult things and remained a problem for all. Many iPhone users suffer baseband issues after upgrading to latest iOS versions without preserving baseband. As a result they end up in a locked iPhone. The only solution tot this problem is carrier unlocking or stick to same carrier. Ultras0w was used for unlocking of iPhones for a long time but now iPhone 4S unlock is still awaited and now people has no hopes for Unlock. Since iOS 4.3.4 and onwards we are relying on Gevey SIM unlock procedure which ultimately leads to Tethered Jailbreak.
There are several guides available for downgrade of devices to previous version along with baseband but they are also not very successful all the time. But some users have reported that they have performed a successful downgrade. For instance we have Downgrade iPhone 3G / 3GS Baseband 06.15.00 To 05.13.04 through which success rate remained 50 to 60 percent.
So you must be interested to know that what pod3g has said about the unlocking base band on twitter:
Now as we know from our experience that pod2g enjoys excellent reputation in Jailbreak community so his tweet to his followers must be taken as a ray of hope. As he has said that some success is achieved, he means it and he also expects users to wait for some more to come. Now you must be wondering that why a key person from Jailbreak community is doing work on Unlocking. The answer is that a TippingPoint DVLabs Pwn2Own competition in September is offering $100,000 for the hacker who will find a baseband exploit. So he is expecting to be the one, the only bad side of this Unlock maybe that it will not be exactly like typical software unlock rather will be through network. But it is a positive step in the field and you never know that same exploit may be used by some other team in the same way as Redsn0w used to Jailbreak iOS 5.1.1 just after the launch of Absinthe.
